iObeya vs ShopBoard: rooms of boards, or one board per cell

iObeya sells digital Obeya rooms, licensed per room per year. Your team sets up the boards inside them. ShopBoard gives every cell the same built-in board: SQDC, hour-by-hour and 3C/A3.

What each one is built for

iObeya is sold by the room. A room is a team's digital workspace, like a physical Obeya room. Inside are boards: visual canvases of cards, notes and charts. Teams build their own or start from templates.

iObeya says it's used by large enterprises and mid-sized organizations. Customers on its site include Sanofi, Thales and Stellantis.

ShopBoard does one job: the daily board at each cell in a machine, fab or assembly shop. Every cell gets SQDC, an hour-by-hour table and an issue log. Department and plant boards roll up the cells. It runs every morning at the 150-person plant whose GM built it.

When iObeya fits

  • Visual management beyond the floor

iObeya's use cases go past daily management to Obeya rooms, Gemba and continuous improvement. Its help center names Kanban, planning and Hoshin Kanri boards.

  • Links to your other systems

iObeya lists two-way connectors and open APIs. Its integration stories include SAP and Power BI.

  • Strict IT rules

Enterprise offers dedicated or on-premises hosting and SSO. iObeya says it is ISO/IEC 27001 certified. Each user can pick an interface language.

When ShopBoard fits

  • A daily board on every cell

Nothing to design: every cell gets the same board. Scrap logged by part, reason and cost fills in the Cost letter.

  • A small or mid-size plant

Free covers 1 department, 2 cells and 1 user. Starter is $199 a month for 3 departments, 10 cells and 5 users. Professional is $499 a month with no limit on cells or users.

  • No sales call to start

Try the public demo with no account. Sign up free and a sample board is there on your first login. Your own cell takes about 10 minutes.

What ShopBoard doesn't do

  • No API or connectors. Data goes in by hand or by CSV.
  • No on-premises hosting, no SSO and no security certification.
  • English only.
  • No email or chat alerts.
  • The four letters and their color rules are fixed. There's no People letter.
  • No free-form, Kanban or planning boards.
  • An issue stays with its cell. The department board lists it, but you can't route or assign it to a tier 2 board.
  • Not live. The Wall view reloads its cards and issues every minute. The desktop boards don't refresh on their own.

Questions

Does iObeya have SQDC and tier boards?

Yes. Its daily management page describes SQCDP letters on a Tier 1 board. A red letter opens an issue card with an owner. An issue that can't be closed at Tier 1 goes to the Tier 2 review. The difference: your team sets up iObeya's KPIs and color rules. ShopBoard's come built in.

How does iObeya pricing compare?

Team+ is €3,780 per room per year. Enterprise needs at least 10 rooms and is priced on request. iObeya doesn't publish how many rooms a plant needs, so we don't guess a total. ShopBoard is free for 1 department, 2 cells and 1 user. Paid plans are a flat price from $199 a month.

Can ShopBoard connect to our ERP or Power BI?

No. There's no API. Managers load data by CSV. On Enterprise, we map your ERP exports to those imports with you. iObeya's integrations page names SAP and Power BI.

How long does setup take?

With ShopBoard, a sample board is there on your first login. Your own cell takes about 10 minutes. A whole department with targets and history takes a day or two. iObeya's FAQ says most teams are up and running in under a week.
